Radio Drama Revival

Showcasing the diversity and vitality of modern audio drama

Episode 100: Be There Sleet, or Snow, or Slice…

December 13, 2008 By Fred

shadow-bear-audio-dramaIt was not a pretty day in Portland, Maine. And though I trolled around looking for Wifi connection in the middle of a severe ice storm, there was no internet to be found (just snapped tree limbs and downed powerlines, which, after we’d driven across a couple, we were told still might be dangerous and hold residual power… oops).

Power outages still persist, luckily I live off-grid and was happily generating my own power yesterday. Nothing better than to hole up in the house and listen to the gift of audio drama while cranking a fire in the wood stove, and it is my pleasure now to share with you another chunk of Shadow of the Bear.

Things are getting interesting with our two young maidens and their bear, though an annoying dwarf and a mystery the two heroines have yet to understand threaten them in ways they have yet to understand.

Here’s to episode 100!

    Hey there,

Just wanted to let you know that I’ve really enjoyed listening to “Shadow of the Bear” on WMPG–so much so that I found your site here and listened further. Thanks for putting fun and interesting stuff on the air and for helping to bring back radio drama. (I’m enjoying the lighter fare–not a big horror fan, but mystery is fun.) Take care.

Belinda, I’m so excited to hear that! The show’s radio listeners don’t speak up much so I’m doubly excited that you both enjoyed the drama and were inspired to check out the site. The show has definitely taken a less macabre turn this month and I think you’ll like “Saki” if you didn’t hear it on ‘MPG, as well as Quicksilver’s spectacular rendition of “A Christmas Carol” which will be airing Christmas Day.

And please check out the Shadow of the Bear site to hear the whole thing! The MP3 Download is a very reasonable $15

    Best,
    Fred

I enjoyed the past two episodes very much. I think you do a great job finding these stories and I am very happy with the sound levels. Many podcasts are either too low or have backgrounds noise making it hard to hear the story.

Great job and happy holidays to you!

    Carol,

Thanks so much for your comments! I do hope you stick around to tune in more, and if you’re feeling in the Christmas spirit, please drop a positive comment on the show on iTunes.

    Happy New Year!
    Fred

    Wow! One hundred shows!

(Yeah, okay, I’m a few weeks behind in my listening. Still, the milestone deserves a mention. And a toast, if you happen to be drinking right now. Which you should be.)

    Congrats!

I just listened to Episode 100, “Shadow of the Bear.” It was mesmerizing and superbly dramatized. Thank you for presenting this opportunity for me to learn by listening that radio drama did not end in 1962 when Supense and Johnny Dollar went off the air. You are delivering real contemporary entertainment! I’m hooked after one cast!

    Oops–Suspense, I meant to say.

    Steve,

Thanks for the comment! I’ve heard a lot of good things about “Bear” so I’m glad I put it on. I personally thought it was a great example of how you can take a fairy tale and make it “fresh.” I’m tempted to go back and read the original novel to see how much they compare.

    Best,
    Fred
