INTRO

You’ve moved to start a new life upon the frontier: it’s hot, surrounded by untamed wildland, and also, the moon is going to fall out of the sky. Just another day in Midst, a bustling boomtown in an otherworldly universe that’s out to eat you alive.

Let’s meet up in the cool darkness of a cabaret and hope the sky don’t fall, on Radio Drama Revival.

[theme music]

Hello, and welcome to Radio Drama Revival, the podcast that showcases the diversity and vitality of modern audio fiction. I’m your host, Elena Fernandez Collins.

Midst is one of those podcasts that in its first season expertly straddles the line between expected fantastical genre fare and off-the-walls absurdity. In a world where doing good deeds is accounted for and stamped with a literal price, the citizens of a small island outpost scramble to make something of themselves while reality starts turning in on itself. This is a brilliantly colorful universe, with characters that step into their shoes and your imagination as though they have always been there.

You’ll be guided by the narrators: three omniscient, prickly, sarcastic, and unreliable godlike voices who will guide you through the world, the story, the characters actions and thoughts, and the unfortunate consequences of living in Midst. It’s a flow that feels almost like a jam session, building off each other with ease and sharply pointing out mistakes. My recommendation? Trust the narrators about as far as you can throw them.

Sit back with a drink, because you’re going to need it, as we look out around the outlands for the first time in episode one, Unrise.

It will get weirder.  Trust me, if not the Narrators. Here’s episode two: Secrets.
